REsilienT water gOvernance Under climate CHange within the WEFE NEXUS

RETOUCH NEXUS is a 48-month HORIZON EUROPE Research and Innovation project funded by the European Union starting in January 2O23 and ending in December 2026.

Working towards a secure water future

Increased water scarcity caused by anthropocentric and natural causes demands an integrated approach in water governance to efficiently allocate water resources to various competing uses. The RETOUCH NEXUS project aims at introducing and promoting the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus as a multi-level and cross-sectoral approach that supports the EU water economy and relies on ecological and social considerations.

RETOUCH NEXUS approach

WATER

Uncertainties and concerns about the future security of water, energy, food and ecosystem services have attracted the attention of
WEFE Nexus, not least because
actions taken in one system
tend to affect others.

ENERGY

The WEFE Nexus recognizes the complex interdependencies (spatial, temporal, institutional, jurisdictional) between water, energy, food and ecosystem resilience,
and promotes an integrated
and holistic approach.

FOOD

Additional challenges in cross-sectoral integration emerge through the appearance of silos, by diminishing the potential
for synergies that promote
resilient
and effective
water governance.

ECOSYSTEM

The RETOUCH NEXUS project aims to investigate and improve the implementation
of the WEFE Nexus solutions in Europe
in order to promote innovative planning approaches in all sectors
of water use.
