Water is at the heart of life, and as climate change accelerates, protecting our frozen water resources is more urgent than ever. The RETOUCH NEXUS project is proud to support World Water Day 2025, dedicated to the theme of Glacier Preservation.
As we celebrate World Water Day 2025, the RETOUCH NEXUS project reaffirms its commitment to sustainable water governance and the protection of glaciers, a crucial source of freshwater for millions worldwide.
With 2025 designated as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation, a joint global event will take place on March 21 at the UN Headquarters in New York, marking both World Water Day and the first-ever World Day of Glaciers. During the event, the 2025 UN World Water Development Report will be released, offering critical policy recommendations to tackle the pressing challenges of glacier loss.
What are glaciers?
A glacier is a river of ice, often covered in snow, that slowly moves down a valley from mountainous areas, with its meltwater feeding rivers and lakes downstream.
fic assessments and policy decisions on climate adaptation and mitigation.
Why are glaciers important?
Glaciers play a vital role in the water cycle, supplying fresh water for:
✅ Drinking water & sanitation
✅ Agriculture & food production
✅ Industry & clean energy
✅ Healthy ecosystems
Glaciers also regulate oceanic circulation, helping to control heat, carbon dioxide, and nutrients that sustain global food webs. Additionally, they reflect vast amounts of solar radiation, acting as a natural cooling system for our planet.
What is happening to glaciers?
Glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates. Due to climate change, warmer temperatures lead to:
🔴 Shorter winters & longer summers
🔴 Less snowfall & more rainfall
🔴 More frequent heatwaves
This rapid melting disrupts regional water availability, increases the risk of natural disasters (such as floods and landslides), and contributes to global sea-level rise.
How do we know glaciers are changing?
For over 130 years, scientists have monitored glaciers using field research and remote sensing technologies. These global datasets provide essential insights for scientific assessments and policy decisions on climate adaptation and mitigation.
