This helps identify conditionally optimal water allocations and pricing mechanisms for agriculture and electricity cooling, while taking account of the water-stress threshold in <strong>SDG target 6.4.2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Using country-level data from <strong>27 EU Member States between 2000 and 2019<\/strong>, the study explores how different water-availability and water-use scenarios could shape both economic outcomes and water allocation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h5 aria-level=\"4\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What does the analysis show?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The results vary markedly across Europe. Under the model&#8217;s assumptions, at least <strong>16 EU countries have water allocations that differ from the identified conditional optimum or involve unsustainable water use<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The analysis also shows that more conservative water allocations can increase countries&#8217; resilience to water-stress scenarios. In some countries, pricing mechanisms could help reduce water use where allocations exceed optimal levels. In others, pricing could support the redistribution of water between sectors, particularly from electricity supply towards agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h5 aria-level=\"4\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Connecting water policy with the energy transition<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.8&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;||40px|||&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the study&#8217;s key insights concerns the relationship between <strong>water use and electricity production<\/strong>. The analysis finds that deviations from conditional optimal allocations are largely associated with higher-than-optimal water use in the electricity supply sector.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This point to an important WEFE nexus connection: moving towards <strong>renewable energy sources with lower water footprints<\/strong> could ease pressure on water resources.
