On 3\u00a0June 2025<\/strong>, the European Commission<\/strong> presented the European Water Resilience Strategy<\/strong>, the EU\u2019s first-ever comprehensive plan to address the mounting water challenges caused by climate change, pollution, and unsustainable water use<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With Europe warming faster than any other continent, the effects are already visible: more frequent droughts and floods, rising water stress, and mounting economic losses<\/strong>. Currently, only 40% of EU surface waters<\/strong> meet good ecological standards, and water-related disasters have already cost the EU over \u20ac360 billion<\/strong> in recent decades.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Three Core Objectives for Water Resilience<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The Strategy sets out a roadmap for making Europe water-resilient by 2050<\/strong> by focusing on three main objectives:<\/p>\n

    Restore and protect the water cycle<\/strong> – using nature-based solutions, improving water retention in landscapes, and combating pollution.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Build a water-smart economy<\/strong> – prioritising efficiency, reuse, and sustainable supply in agriculture, industry, and energy sectors.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Ensure clean and affordable water for all<\/strong> – empowering communities to take part in water governance, and improving access for vulnerable populations.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Why This Matters for RETOUCH NEXUS<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At RETOUCH NEXUS<\/strong>, we fully support this strategic direction. Our work focuses on integrating water governance into the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus – <\/strong>an approach directly aligned with the Strategy\u2019s goals of improving resource efficiency, tackling water scarcity, and promoting participatory governance.<\/p>\n

    Many of the Strategy\u2019s priorities – nature-based solutions, stakeholder engagement, circular approaches, and integrated planning – <\/strong>are central to RETOUCH NEXUS activities across our case studies in Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    This new Strategy is a call to action for policymakers, businesses, farmers, and citizens to rethink how we manage water. It highlights the importance of cross-border cooperation, investment in innovation, and digitalisation to strengthen Europe\u2019s water systems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
